Many people wish to pursue education independently, working with a trained academic via personal tutorials in an informal setting. Our bespoke online courses for adults ensure academically rigorous, in-depth coverage of your chosen subject through direct contact with experienced, qualified tutors.

Meet Your Tutor

Often, you will be working with Dr. Jane Orton herself. Jane is an independent scholar with degrees from Durham, Oxford, Edinburgh and Bologna Universities, covering politics, philosophy, classics, religious studies, anthropology and history. She has sixteen years of tutoring and lecturing experience, as well as experience marking undergraduate exams. How it Works

Jane says:

“One of my favourite things to do is to work with adults who have a ‘passion project’ – whether that’s a series of tutorials to gain knowledge of a topic and develop your own views, supporting you in writing a book or helping you to develop a unique independent research project. I’ve put together a number of ‘skeleton courses’ that we can follow to give you a good overview, but these can be adapted depending on what you’re looking for. We can also do sessions where we discuss works of philosophy or research papers, analyse historical documents or other primary sources, or add in extra material. I specialise in taking an adaptable, organic approach led by your interests and tailored to your needs - no ‘one size fits all’ strategies but real, human interaction.”

You have the option to:

- Choose from one of our pre-written academic courses (tailored to the duration and intensity of your choosing) with the option to request additional content or combine one or more courses.
- Request a course that is specifically designed for you: specify the subject, duration of the course, number of contact hours per week, independent study time and level of difficulty.
- Request occasional ad hoc tutorials on the subject of your choosing.
- Intellectual sparring sessions can be incorporated into any of our courses or commissioned independently. These are designed to sharpen your ability to develop and defend an argument, examine the arguments of others on an equal footing – regardless of respective levels of education – and to scrutinise your own ideas.
